Juvederm Sculptra

Boost Your Natural Collagen With Sculptra

This FDA-approved injectable helps smooth cheek wrinkles, smile lines and improves overall skin quality.

Sculptra, or poly-L-lactic acid (PPLA), is a unique facial injectable that replaces collagen lost during the aging process. Facial collagen loss is a key factor in an aging appearance. Collagen acts as the support structure for our skin, providing overall volume and giving shape to our faces. Unfortunately, our bodies don’t produce as much collagen as we age, leading to loss of volume and loose skin, especially in the face.

The PPLA in Sculptra causes the dermal layer of our skin to produce collagen, which restores volume and fullness in the face. The result is a very natural-looking improvement that can last 2 years or more. Sculptra can be a beautiful preventative way to avoid loose skin as we age. Ideally, beginning these treatments in your 30’s will help to maintain the thickness and tightness of young skin.

How is Sculptra injected?

Sculptra is injected in stages. The amount of Sculptra that you will need to correct your volume loss will be discussed with you prior to your first session. As a rough rule of thumb, people need one vial per decade of life (i.e. somebody in their 40’s will need 4 vials, etc.).

Usually, two vials are used per treatment session. The reason this is done in phases is so that you and your physician can determine how much collagen your body is making in response to the Sculptra before injecting more. Once the initial treatment has been completed, most people need approximately 2 vials per 18 – 24 months.

What are the side effects?

The most common side effect of Sculptra is bruising. We recommend staying away from anything that thins your blood, such as ibuprofen, Motrin, Advil, aspirin, fish oil and/or Vitamin E for 4-5 days before your injection. There can be slight swelling at the injection sites, as well as tenderness. Occasionally, small lumps can form after the injection of Sculptra. Almost always, these can be felt but not seen and they go away on their own. If they are bothersome, there are ways of getting rid of them.

Who is a good candidate for Sculptra?

Anyone who has lost volume because of aging, weight loss and/or medical issues is a good candidate for Sculptra. It can be used to tighten skin in the temples, cheeks, jawline, neck and chest.
