Wrinkles are caused by loss of collagen and elastin in our skin, as well as by years of underlying muscle movement. We tend to form more wrinkles as we age and our skin spends more years moving, as well as more years being exposed to sun, pollution and wind.
Unfortunately, wrinkles tend to make us look angry, tired and harsh. Fortunately, there are many options available for wrinkle reduction and removal.
Wrinkle Removal Treatments
Cosmetic injections target treatment areas where wrinkles are caused by excessive muscle movement. In general, these areas are the forehead, the glabella (the area in between the eyebrows) and the crows’ feet. Injections help with wrinkle removal by disrupting the communication between the nerves and the muscles, so that the muscles are not able to move as much as usual. This then softens, and eventually removes, wrinkles.1
Fillers, such as Juvederm, Voluma, and Radiesse can also be used to reduce the appearance of wrinkles.2 Fillers are especially good for wrinkles that are due to loss of collagen. Fillers are often good options for wrinkle removal in the cheeks, the area around the mouth and the lips.
Procedures such as the CO2RE laser, Skin Pen microneedling, and Ulthera are all excellent options for wrinkle reduction because they stimulate collagen production3,4, which can “plump” the skin, resulting in less sagging and fewer wrinkles.
Wrinkle Removal Lasers
The CO2RE laser is a fractional resurfacing CO2 laser that minimizes wrinkles, improves texture, gets rid of sun spots and improves pore size. The laser treats both the superficial and deep skin, which helps with both fine and deep wrinkle removal.3
Skin Pen microneedling is a tool with multiple small needles that penetrate the skin, causing “micro-damaged” areas. Again, this can stimulate collagen production, which may help with reduction of fine lines and wrinkles. Ulthera uses ultrasound energy to produce both muscle tightening and collagen production in areas including the neck, chest and face.4
Multiple products also help with wrinkle removal. Retinols stimulate cellular turnover (which slows as we age) and, therefore, improve texture as well as wrinkles.5 Growth factors are an ingredient which are critical to the health of our skin and can aid with wrinkle removal.6 Genesis MedSpa carries several medical-grade product lines that contain both retinol and growth factors. Of course, a high-quality sunscreen is an important product that helps prevent wrinkles from forming in the first place!
