Acne Treatment Options
Salicylic Acid Peels
These peels are gentle, no down-time peels which help to fight acne. Salicylic acid is antibacterial, which helps to control the Propionibacterium acnes (P. acne) bacteria that is involved with many peoples’ acne.1 In addition, salicylic acid is attracted to oils and so it facilitates the breakdown of sebum that can clog and enlarge facial pores. Blackheads and whiteheads can be more gently removed by our aestheticians once the salicylic acid has broken the sebum down.
Blue Light Treatments
Blue Light Therapy is an effective, non-invasive and pain-free treatment for moderate inflammatory acne. Narrow band blue light causes a photodynamic effect within the pylosebacious gland that kills P. acne, the bacteria primarily responsible for acne vulgaris.5 This treatment can be performed weekly. Depending upon the severity of acne, a series of 8 – 20 treatments may be needed.
The Cutera Laser Genesis utilizes non-invasive laser can safely, discretely and effectively treat inflammatory acne and/or post-inflammatory hyperplasia (darkened areas left over from acne scars). By gently heating the upper dermal layer of the skin, Laser Genesis stimulates collagen and dilated capillaries to reduce redness. You can expect to see subtle, yet consistent results after each treatment. Depending upon the severity of inflammation, 6 to 10 treatments may be needed and can be performed every two weeks.4
Photodynamic Therapy (PDT)
PDT combines Levulan, a photosensitizing agent and Blue Light Therapy. This can be an excellent treatment for moderate to severe cystic acne.3 Levulan is applied to the skin and allowed to sit on the skin for approximately two to three hours, during which time it is absorbed by the overactive cells in the pilosebaceous glands and by P. acne (the bacteria responsible for much acne) cells. The client then sits in front of the Blue Light, which activates the Levulan, effectively destroying the cells which have absorbed it. Normal skin cells do not absorb Levulan and are therefore not affected by it. Two to four treatments approximately one month apart are often needed for best results.5
The medical staff at Genesis MedSpa can inject small amounts of Kenalog, which is a steroid, into cystic acne lesions, which causes most to disappear within about 12 hours.2 So, the next time you get a big, painful, ugly pimple that you know isn’t going to go away by itself for a long time, request a free consultation!
