The Pearl laser procedure combines the impact of resurfacing lasers with the gentleness and safety of non-invasive procedures to treat aging and sun-damaged skin. Pearl reduces wrinkles, uneven texture and sun damage with fewer treatments and less overall recovery time than other technologies to provide a healthy, pearl-like glow.

Who is a good candidate for the Pearl?

The Pearl is recommended for clients who would like to improve texture, fine lines and wrinkles and/or hyperpigmentation. After the treatment, your skin will be smoother, softer and have increased collagen. The procedure also results in improvement in skin tone, decrease in fine lines, improvement in sun damage and some tightening of the skin.

How does the Pearl work?

During the procedure, the top layer of skin is treated with pulses of light. The laser simultaneously sends heat to the deeper layers of skin to provide longer-term benefits. A natural protective dressing forms on the skin to minimize downtime during the healing process. On post-procedure day 3 or 4, this natural dressing will peel or slough off, leaving new, healthy, vibrant skin underneath. In approximately 10 - 14 days, you will notice marked improvement in overall skin clarity, smoothness and softness - all from a 30 minute treatment with only 5-7 days of "social" downtime.

What is "social" downtime?

Downtime is the time spent recovering from a procedure. With "social" downtime, you can continue your normal daily activities. However, you may not wish to attend important social events because your face will appear red for the approximately a week and you will have peeling for the last several days of that week.

Does the treatment hurt?

A topical anesthetic will be put on your face before the Pearl treatment. The procedure itself feels like a series of brief pinches on your skin. On a scale of 1-10, with 10 representing severe pain, most patients report the Pearl laser treatment feels like a 3 or a 4.

Are there restrictions on my activity after the Pearl treatment?

For approximately 24 hours after the treatment, your skin will feel slightly sunburned. During this time, you will be asked to frequently soak your skin in a vinegar/water mixture. You will wear an ointment on your skin for 4-5 days after the treatment and cannot wear make-up or sunscreen during this time. Therefore, you will need to wear protective clothing and limit sun exposure during this time. However, all other activities are fine to do immediately after your Pearl treatment.

How many treatments are recommended?

Most patients require two treatments spaced approximately one month apart to achieve maximal results. However, some patients may need only one treatment.

Does the Cutera Pearl laser have FDA clearance?

Yes, Cutera received FDA clearance in March, 2007 for the treatment of wrinkles.
